May

May | Magis TV

2002 • Horror Drama • Movie

Please be aware that this review will contain spoilers; proceed with caution.

I’m glad that a follower reached out to me to review this film, as I had been meaning to watch it for a long time. May is cruel, funny, ghastly, and even downright unsettling. The main character resembles a very creepy doll that she owns and seems almost possessed by. However, this movie is not about possession; it’s about obsession and imperfection. May (played by Angela Bettis) was born with a lazy eye, which forces her to wear an eye patch from early on. The moral of the story is, “If you can’t find a friend, make one,” and make one she does.

May lives alone and works at the local veterinary clinic with her co-worker (played by Anna Faris), with whom she becomes dangerously involved later on in the film. One day, she spots a man's hands, which she immediately becomes infatuated with, and upon seeing the man’s face, she becomes smitten. Not knowing the man, she begins to stalk him and finally finds a way to come in contact with him at a local coffee shop. They start to get to know each other as friends by bumping into each other in different instances; however, May suddenly realizes that she wants so much more than a friendship. The pair starts to date, and on one occasion, Adam (played by Jeremy Sisto) takes May to his apartment.

Upon showing her his self-made horror film, he realizes that the real horror is not what is being shown on the screen; it is the person sitting next to him. After realizing this, Adam starts to avoid May, which affects her feelings and makes her act out against herself and others. May eventually starts to show her true colors, and she ultimately reaches her end goal, which is to create the perfect doll.

This is a definite rewatch. I give this movie 10 bones out of 10!

Note

May is bloody and gory, but it is not without its moments of humor. My favorite line in the movie was when someone asks, “Have you got any cold ones in there?” when referring to the cooler she was lugging. May then responds, “Yes, I do.” The line can be left to interpretation, but it is obvious to the viewer.

The Sadness

The Sadness | Magis TV

2021 • Body Horror • Movie

The Sadness is a Taiwanese horror film set in the city of Taipei during a viral pandemic. It is written, directed, and edited by Rob Jabbaz. Instead of the virus turning you into a zombie or being like Covid-19, it drives you to commit heinous acts such as murder or to commit suicide.

The main story is based around a young couple that is trying to be reunited amid the chaos that has ensued in the city.

This is a definite rewatch. I give this movie 10 bones out of 10!

Note

This movie is very gory, so it is not for the faint of heart. I love that the movie starts off showing how life was before the pandemic and how the effects of the virus slowly creep onto the citizens. My favorite scenes include the subway and the hospital. You must think I’m sick.

The Medium (Rang Zong)

The Medium (Rang Zong) | Magis TV

2021 • Supernatural Horror • Movie

This horror film from Thailand was filmed in a documentary style, making it even more realistic and eerie.

From Director Banjong Pisanthanakun, The Medium will shock and wow audiences. Footage was found from a documentary crew that had been filming a Thai family who had a strange inheritance.

Female members of the family become shamans by being possessed by the goddess (Bayan). The story centers around the shaman Nim and her niece Mink. Initially, Bayan was supposed to possess Mink’s mother, but she refuses to be possessed, so in turn, her sister Nim becomes the shaman instead.

Don’t let this movie’s slow pace fool you; if you are willing to be patient, the best is yet to come.

This is a definite rewatch. I give this movie 10 bones out of 10!

Note

I had initially meant to watch this movie years ago, but somehow I never clicked on the file to view it. Regardless of that, I think that I picked to watch it at a perfect time. I enjoyed the beautiful countryside scenery and every single aspect of this film.

I will not elaborate more lest I spoil the film for you, which I do not intend to do. Promise me that you will give it a chance. Your life will never be the same again.

This is honestly the perfect movie to get a good night’s sleep, at least for me, because I sleep best after watching a good horror movie.

Audition

Audition | Magis TV

1999 • Psychological Horror • Movie

From famed Japanese director Takashi Miike, the movie Audition teaches us that it is wise to pay heed to others’ warnings. The story starts with a Japanese man’s wife passing away, and after her passing, he is stuck in solitude for 7 long years. Only to be accompanied by his son, dog, and maid.

His son, who longs to see his father happy, decides to tell him that he should take a new wife. Upon commenting on this news to his best friend Yoshikawa, his friend, who is a film producer, decides to hold a fake audition for Aoyama to find a wife. Aoyama quickly sets his eyes on his preferred candidate. If only they knew the horrors that lay ahead.

This is a definite rewatch. I give this movie 10 bones out of 10!

Note

The movie starts off by showing us the loneliness that Aoyama faces after his wife, Ryoko, passes away. I believe that this is the beauty of the film because it builds up slowly to the horrifying climax.

I recommend skipping this movie if you are squeamish, considering that there are some scenes that are not advised for the faint of heart.

Sleep

Sleep | Magis TV

2023 • Psychological Thriller • Movie

From writer and director Jason Yu comes South Korea's film 'Sleep.'

A married couple's life is suddenly disrupted when the husband starts to experience a bizarre sleep disorder.

Starring the late actor Lee Sun-Kyun of 'Paradise' fame, this movie will have you reeling with anxiety.

This is a definite rewatch. I give this movie 10 bones out of 10!

Note

Having experienced sleep disorders myself, I could really relate to the main character's ordeal. It was especially interesting to see, from an outside perspective, what his wife and family members could see or experience.
